BMAT Test Information

The Biomedical Admissions Test (BMAT) is required by 5 universities for entry into a medicine, veterinary or dental degree course. It is a 2 hour paper based test that is offered once a year in early November.


The test date for the 2010 BMAT test is 3rd November.


Universities requiring the BMAT are:

  • University of Cambridge*

  • Imperial College London

  • University of Oxford Medical School

  • Royal Veterinary College*

  • University College London

* BMAT required for veterinary medicine applicants

The BMAT test consists of three sections as follows:

Questions are multiple choice, with the student being asked to select either one or multiple answers from the ones provided.

Scientific Knowledge
& Application

This section covers the three sciences plus maths (GCSE level). Answers will either be multiple choice, fill-in-the-blank, free response, or matching (typically used for labelling a picture, for example parts of the human body).

Writing1 question (from a choice of 3)
Students have 1 page of A4 paper to answer the essay prompt. Essay topics are science-based.

Key 2010 dates for the BMAT

1st September – Registration for the BMAT opens
30th September – Closing date for standard registrations
15th October – Closing date for BMAT registrations 
3rd November – BMAT test day
1st December – BMAT results released

BMAT Test Fees:

£32.10 Standard fee for UK candidates
£34.20 Fee for Late registration candidates
